I always advise clients to get a second opinion on a health issue whether it is for surgery or a newly diagnosed health problem.
Many people are hesitant to get a second opinion. I sense it is overwhelming to go through the process again. Often, a second opinion can be gotten by sending all relevant documentation including MRI/CAT Scan pictures and written reports to different specialist. By reading the scans and reports, a specialist can assess the situation. Often, the client will have to visit the doctor. However, it is good to get an opinion outside the circle of doctors and specialists referred to by your medical practice. You will be surprised how often the opinions vary. As the client, you can evaluate what works for you and I believe it is always good to have options. Doctors and other medical professionals have become used to the idea of second opinions and many support and encourage clients to seek other opinions. Nobody is going to turn you away or think less of you as a client because you got a second opinion. It has nothing to do with whether you trust the doctor or not. It has to do with having information and making a choice for you. If you have questions, talk to an advocate or case manager.
